Heritage Marine Skills Project
With the support of the Heritage Fund and players of the National Lottery, we have been able to run a Maritime Heritage Skills projects here at Circles. Each term young people get the chance to engage with a different element of the maritime industry, through expert visits and trips out to workplaces. At the end of each year we will also get the chance to go sailing on an historic boat.
Rigging
We had an expert rigger visit us at Circles to teach us about how sailing boats are rigged. Her name was Jas and she came from T.S. Rigging in Maldon. She taught us all about standing and running rigging, as well as introducing us to all the different career opportunities that rigging can lead on to.
Pioneer
We visited the Pioneer Trust in Brightlingsea to check out the large wooden fishing boat they have restored. We also learnt about the heritage marine apprenticeships they run.
Docklands Museum
We travelled into East London to visit the Docklands Museum. It tells the story of the London Docks and the people and vessels that worked there. It was an interesting interactive space that challenged some of our pre-conceived ideas of what a museum is like.
